ILGA 2008 World Conference in Québec City – CGLQ Press Release

In brief: The Coalition gaie et lesbienne du Québec (CGLQ), mandated to organize the 24th ILGA World Conference at the Québec City Convention Centre in May 2008, was forced to announce the postponement of the event following a decision by ILGA. This press release recounts the circumstances surrounding the cancellation.

Postponement announcement

Québec City, March 13, 2008 – The Coalition gaie et lesbienne du Québec (CGLQ), which had been entrusted with organizing the 24th World Conference of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA), is forced to cancel the event scheduled to take place at the Québec City Convention Centre from May 14 to 20, 2008, following a decision by ILGA.

Event background

CGLQ is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote, represent, and defend the rights of Québec's gay and lesbian community. Securing the 24th ILGA World Conference for Québec City represented a major achievement for the organization and for the international recognition of Québec's LGBT community.

The conference was expected to bring together delegates from more than 400 ILGA member organizations, representing approximately 90 countries around the world. It was scheduled to take place at the same time as the International Day Against Homophobia (May 17), which would have added a particularly powerful symbolic dimension to the event.

CGLQ's perspective

The postponement of the conference was a disappointment for CGLQ and Québec's entire LGBT community. Nevertheless, CGLQ continued its advocacy and rights-defence activities, pursuing its work on the international stage thanks to its observer status with the United Nations ECOSOC, obtained in July 2007.

This episode illustrates the logistical and organizational challenges faced by non-profit community organizations when they undertake to organize major international events.
